History
The Center for the Book also promotes and encourages the historical study of books, reading, literacy and libraries.
Publication highlights encompass histories of both the Library of Congress and the Center for Book itself. They include an illustrated, 569-page “Encyclopedia of the Library of Congress” (2004); online versions of two brief general histories of the Library of Congress and its buildings (1993 and 1995); a history of libraries and scholarly communication in the U.S. (1990); and a brief volume about how eight book collectors, including Jane and Leland Stanford, shaped Stanford University and its libraries (1991).
